From Northumberland in the north to the Tees Valley in the south, The North East Family Arts Network (NEFAN) supports the region’s culture sector to broaden family audiences and ensure their offer is led by the needs of diverse families.
Established in 2013, we ensure families’ voices are heard through the innovative Family Explorers North East digital initiative and provide training and best practice advice to our sector.
Everything we do is underpinned by robust research and listening to the needs of families.

Who’s behind it?
Created by the culture sector for the culture sector, a multi-skilled steering group guides us. Our infrastructure is supported by our lead organisation, North East Museums.
We are one of several Family Arts Networks in England supported by the national Family Arts Campaign (FAC) and have our own North East Family Arts Ambassador.
We are proud to champion the FAC’s Family Arts Standards and Age Friendly Standards.
Our funding comes from culture sector membership subscriptions and the FAC.
NEFAN is managed on a day-to-day basis by Sallyanne Flemons (Director) and Bethanie Wardell (Digital Officer).
The steering group is chaired by Sheryl McGregor, Communications & Development Manager for North East Museums.
